Phillies Win on Strong Pitching and Timely Hitting

Tim Lincecum made pitches to get out of jams, but the Phillies made the most out of early chances to give Lincecum the loss.  Lincecum went 7 innings, allowing 9 hits, three walks and giving up 5 earned runs.   This would have been a good amount for the Giant's lineup to overcome, but Kyle Kendrick dominated from the lead off to the pitcher's spot as he scattered 6 hits, 6 strikeouts and no walks.  Johnathon Papelbon worked a scoreless 9th to get an inning of work, as a save was not in order, with the Phillies winning 6 – 2.
One glaring difference between these two pitchers was the walks stat.  Lincecum walked three, while Kendrick walked zero.  Lincecum's weakness was his command and coming off his worst season, he needed all his pitches to be thrown for strikes.  Tonight was not the night as his command was up, which allowed the Phillie's lineup to drive the ball to the gaps.  The Giant's pitching has struggled with giving up the long ball, as Chase Utley and Ryan Howard each hit solo shots.  Even with the massive outfield at AT&T Park, the ball traveled well tonight, and the Giants could not overcome the deficit.  Chase Utley, the Phillies second baseman had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, while Ryan Howard reached base 4 times.
The Phillies have taken the first two from the World Series champions and look for the sweep in a day game, starting at 12:45.  Barry Zito takes on Johnathon Pettibone.
