The Giants went in to Monday afternoon’s game losing their
first two games of the series to the Phillies, so it was up to Barry Zito to
salvage a win for the boys in orange and black. Zito would have to pitch to
Buster Posey’s backup, Guillermo Quiroz, because Posey was given the day off.
Francisco Peguero made the start in left, as Gregor Blanco was moved to center,
due to a grain injury to Angel Pagan.
The
Phillies put out young-gun Jonathan Pettibone, who had never faced the Giants
before today, but has pitched very well so far this season. In the bottom of
the second inning, Pettibone gave Hunter Pence a pitch he could hit, and he did
deep to left for his seventh homerun of the season. Pence has been on fire
lately, and if he is driving in runs at this pace, the Giants will be
unstoppable this year.
Zito came
into the day only giving up 1 earned run in his 26 innings pitched at AT&T
this young season. He went 7 innings and only gave up 1 ER on 4 hits. He made
only one noticeable mistake in the game, a pitch that sat up for Phillie, Kevin
Frandsen.
In the 9th
inning, Giants closer Sergio Romo came into the game with a 3-1 lead. Romo was
twelve for thirteen on saves this season, but he just did not have his usual
stuff today. Chase Utley drove in Jimmy Rollins, and Michael Young aggressively
moved to third base. This risk proved worth it, as he scored off a Delmon Young
sac fly to tie the game.
In the 10th
inning, Buster Posey came to the plate for the first time in the game, and
singled. With Posey on third and Brandon Crawford on first, Andres Torres lined
a ball into right and the Giants earned their 20th win of the
season.
